Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Treatments

Return to Main Page

This web site is about a human respiratory virus which typically causes the following symptoms: chronic upper respiratory and/or nasal infection, powerful neurological changes, constant fatigue and depression, limb weakness and joint looseness.

The symptoms this virus causes resemble chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), and so below we list treatments that can help CFS. In case you wish to see a comprehensive list of chronic fatigue syndrome symptoms, see this list: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Symptoms.

Medical Treatments for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic fatigue syndrome is usually caused by one of these viruses: Coxsackie B virus, Epstein Barr virus, human herpes six virus (HHV-6), parvovirus B19 or parainfluenza virus 5. It may well be that our chronic sore throat virus is just a more virulent strain of one of these known viruses.

Depending on which virus is the cause of someone’s chronic fatigue syndrome, the latest medical treatment is different. It is a good idea to be tested by a specialist CFS doctor to determine which virus is causing your CFS, so that you can tailor the treatment. Well-known chronic fatigue syndrome doctors include: Dr Chia, Dr Montoya, Dr De Meirleir, Dr Levine, Dr Lerner, Dr Chenney.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome due to Coxsackie B Virus (Enterovirus)

Dr John Chia has employed double interferon therapy to put this subtype of CFS into remission. The interferon treatment lasts for one month, after which many patients are much improved. Unfortunately, many patients relapse after about a year, so this therapy is not a permanent cure (yet) for everybody in the case of this CFS subtype.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome due to Epstein Barr Virus or HHV-6 Virus

The drug kutapressin (Nexavir) has been helpful for this subtype of CFS. Dr Kenny de Meirleir at Red Labs (located in Belgium and the USA) uses Kutapressin for treating CFS. Dr Derek Enlander (located in New York) also treats CFS with kutapressin. Alternatively, Dr Jose Montoya has used the antiviral drug Valganciclovir (Valcyte) to treat CFS caused by Epstein Barr virus or HHV-6 virus infections. Dr Dantini in Florida also uses valganciclovir. Note that valganciclovir can sometimes cause significant side effects.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome due to Parvovirus B19

Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) treatment has worked in some cases of this subtype of CFS.

And Finally…

This is an appropriate opportunity to point out how easily a pathogen can spread person-to-person in a household or workplace, and result in significant fatigue and other ailments in this group of people.

I noticed that some people are only mildly effected by this “chronic sore throat virus”; but others suffer very seriously. It is possible that the people who suffer the more severe symptoms are those who already had one or more persistent viruses in their body – viruses such as cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, HHV-6, parvovirus and coxsackie B virus. These viruses are very common: Epstein Barr is found in around 90% of adults, HHV-6 in over 90%, cytomegalovirus in 50% of adults, parvovirus B19 in 50% and coxsackie B virus in 55% of adults.

Assuming you have one or two such viruses in your system – which is likely – then contracting an additional virus may be the “final straw” that tips the balance and kicks off chronic fatigue syndrome or a related disease. People without many pre-existing viruses or microbes in their body may just have more mild, subclinical CFS symptoms when they catch an additional virus. These latter people will still be able to function relatively normally, but may well experience a series of mild physical and mental conditions (such as sensitive digestion, bad memory, bad concentration, skin problems, mild depression, allergy susceptibility, and so forth) from the catching the virus.

So, even if you have not got CFS, it is likely that your health and enjoyment in life is lower than it would be if you were totally virus-free. Although people suffering with CFS number around only 1 or 2% of the population, probably the vast majority of people will have some degree of lowered health due to these same common viruses. This is why everyone should be worried about CFS and similar diseases: even if don’t have CFS, you may have some milder health complaint which is ultimately caused by a virus. Incidentally, this is why concern for the weaker people in society is really a way of helping the whole of society: the weak are often suffering a more extreme case of what everybody else is mildly afflicted by.

This does not mean you should panic about catching a common cold, however. The cold virus (the rhinovirus typically) is usually completed cleared from the body by the immune system. The rhinovirus does not remain in the body permanently, unlike most of the viruses listed above, which do.

But getting back to the etiology of CFS: of course, genetics is another factor in terms of who succumbs to a virus and who just brushes it off, and this must also be considered. And to confuse this cause-and-effect analysis further, the same virus or viruses will not always instigate the same disease. In one person a particular virus may cause chronic fatigue syndrome; but in another person, the very same virus may instigate a related condition such as fibromyalgia, or precipiate diabetes or multiple sclerosis. This is why it is often hard to find the actual viral cause of a disease: a given virus can often cause many different types of disease. And also, a given disease can often be caused by many different viruses and microbes.

So really, now that we know how much damage viruses cause, the sooner we find a universal system to control or eliminate all viruses, and other microbes such as bacteria too, the better it will be. Medical science is now constantly unearthing more and more evidence that viruses (as well as other microbes) are the cause of a huge array of serious diseases, as well as being responsible for myriad milder health conditions.

Once we do eliminate viruses and microbes, there will very likely be an astonishing revolution in the human health-span, longevity, sanity, intellectual elevation, morality and happiness for the generations to come.

What we need is a huge diversion of funds to go into a scientific project of eliminating viruses and microbes. This should be a primary goal for the 21st century.
